Open water (Ocean) Dives

The course includes five dives, each in a different specialty area. There are two mandatory core dives:

  • Deep dive

  • Underwater Navigation dive

The other three dives are selected from different specialties. In Hong Kong, we typically do

  • Night dive

  • Peak Performance Buoyancy dive

  • Underwater Naturalist dive.

The elective dives may be other adventure dives depending on course logistics.

Your instructor will cover the specifics of each adventure dive thoroughly before the dives. You will practise navigation patterns on the boat deck or a beach and then repeat them underwater. You will learn to use your scuba equipment at night, learn the light and hand signals in the dark and improve your buoyancy skills.

Knowledge Development

The Advanced Open Water course is very much hands-on dive course: there is very little academics. You will have the Adventures in Diving manual from which you'll study the chapters pertinent to the dives you will do during the course, and complete the Knowledge Reviews at the end of those chapters. The chapters are not long and go straight to the point.

Your instructor will go over your answers to the Knowledge Review questions with you at some point during the course. In most cases, the theory review is done partially or fully on the boat or shore between the dives or after the dives. There is no exam.

How long does it take?

Two days - usually Saturday afternoon plus evening, and Sunday.
